Before the ‘Arab Spring,’ Egypt was a popular travel destination and home to some of the most iconic artists in the Middle East, such as Oum Kalthoum and Abdel Halem Hafiz.

Amid the terrible civil strife a new scene is rising, spearheaded by bands like Cairokee – the unofficial soundtrack to the rebellion – and Maii Waleed with her entrancing electronic.
