From China to Jerusalem: Friction over the world’s “emerging Jews”

 

In March 2016, five women from Kaifeng, China, packed their bags for the year-long process of officially converting to Judaism and immigrating to Israel, sponsored by organization Shavei Israel.

Leading voices contest Shavei’s work, labeling it politically motivated and legally problematic. Breaking with longstanding policy, Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Ministry is also seeking to build relationships with the million-plus “emerging Jews” around the world. WeiWei shares her experience.
