Over 100 people gathered at a Tel Aviv beach under an oppressive late summer sun. But they didn’t come to swim or to play matkot, Israel’s favorite beach sport. They came here, to the deck of the Carlton Hotel, for a Jewish National Fund event to support Israeli soldiers in Gaza. They came from all over the US and Israel to pack thousands of care packages. The project started when some JNF members in the US decided to organize a solidarity group to travel to Israel. The group traveled throughout central and southern Israel, to the communities hit hardest by rocket fire from Gaza. More than anything else, the JNF solidarity group came to boost morale. But the greatest support they gave was by just being there, connecting with people, in the hospitals and in the bomb shelters.
