  1. Greg Pollock says:

I would guess that the proactive participation rate (as opposed to just answering a poll question) is still quite low in absolute terms. I would think that the increasing frequency measures a sense of unconnectedness to the existing political structure among this small proactive set. If mostly youthful, a hopeful sign would be (relatively) high proportions of soldiers or recent soldiers along with new age types who generally go for animal rights. The former might be expressing uneasiness with the harsh conditions they must defend on duty; that is, they wish that “life” value had a more general outlet. On the other hand, many misanthropes (quite possibly I among them) have a pet, for one often hears that pets do not lie or cheat, being solely of the moment. They remove us from standard human competition, we placed in a benevolent dictator role. So the increase could measure disaffection not so much with State policy on Palestinians or refugees, but a growing sense that the society is becoming alienating. Note that the second attempt at J14 was nixed before it could take root–an alienating outcome for those who feel, well, alienated from the major parties.
