It’s happened at last: After years of negotiation and speculation we’re finally going to see Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, the two best boxers of their generation, slug it out in the ring. The world will be watching the much-hyped bout, which will be the highest-grossing sporting event in history (generating an estimated $250 million), at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2nd.
Former TLV1 sports host Ari Louis, who has talked about Mayweather-Pacquiao on TLV1 before, tells Laragh Widdess who these guys are, what the stakes are, and what all the fuss is about.
Ari says that although the truth is a little more complicated, the fight will be billed as a ‘good guy vs. bad guy’ contest – Mayweather being the charismatic bad guy mired in domestic violence and gambling scandals; Pacquiao being the softly-spoken good guy who’s an actor, military reservist, and congressman in his native Philippines.
It’s generally agreed that the two boxers, moving into their late 30s, are past their prime so no one is expecting an exhilarating match or a knock out, especially given Mayweather’s defensive style. But Ari explains how tactics will come into play, and why, in the end, he thinks Mayweather will win on a unanimous decision.
