Orphaned Land is one of Israel’s most successful musical acts worldwide. Formed in the early 1990s, the band fuses progressive, doom and death metal with oriental folk, drawing on influences from Jewish and Arabic music. Despite their international success, they have only recently become well-known in Israel, following the huge success of their rock ballad “Brother.” Nevertheless, they are popular on the Israeli metal scene, and – interestingly enough – they are extremely popular in the Arab world. Kobi Farhi, co-founder and lead singer of the band, joins us to discuss metal as a religion and explains how growing up in Jaffa has inspired him to write about co-existence.
