Israel’s political map has grown messy and confusing lately. Time was, when the left and right could be easily distinguished. Haaretz Magazine writer Ben Sasson Gordis wrote that Israel’s old single-continuum way of thinking of things – from supporting withdrawal and a Palestinian state to supporting annexation and Greater Israel – is no longer practicable because it doesn’t take into account the crucial question of whether or not people believe Israel can do anything to bring about a Two State solution. Instead of a continuum, he offers a matrix. The X axis remains the old continuum – Two State to One-State. The Y axis measures “agency” or how much control one think Israelis exert over any possible peace process.
We ask whether or not adding the question of “agency” helps us make sense, in new and useful ways, of our political situation, and whether or not this new analysis points us in the direction of new ways to act politically.
