Application denied: The futility of seeking asylum in Israel

 

Israel is one of the world’s largest recipients of African asylum seekers, especially from Eritrea and Sudan. Many are fleeing religious persecution or life-long military service in war-torn regions. Over 5,500 Africans have applied for asylum in Israel and only four of them have been granted refugee status. Most applications are rejected within 24 hours.

TLV1’s Jay Berstein went to the African Refugee Development Center in South Tel Aviv to meet its spokesperson Oscar Olivier, who shed some light on the experiences of African asylum seekers in Israel.
