Dead Tired or Just a Bit Crazy?

Slang usage of the word קרוע (ka’rua), literally meaning ‘torn’, is fascinating because when someone says it about themselves, it means one thing, and when the same is said about them behind their back, it means something completely different.

Hu ma ze kore’a – He is hilarious – הוא מה-זה קורע

Nikrati mi-ts’hok – Laughed my head off – נקרע מצחוק

Likro’a le-mishehu et ha-tsura – To beat someone up badly – לקרוע למישהו את הצורה

Kar’u lo et ha-tsura – They beat him up real bad – קרעו לו את הצורה.

Ma-ze kar’u oti ba-amlot – They really overcharged me with horrible fees – מה-זה קרעו אותי בעמלות

Likro’a et ha-ir – To go bar hopping – לקרוע את העיר

Kol ha-shavu’a karati ta’tachat – All week I worked my butt off – כל השבוע קרעתי ת׳תחת

Likro’a et ha-tachat – To work hard – לקרוע ת׳תחת

Likro’a le-mishehu et ha-tachat – To make someone work really hard – לקרוע למישהו ת׳תחת

Kera, kra’im – A tear, tears – קרע, קרעים

Ha-kera ba-hevra ha-israelit – The rift within Israeli society – הקרע בחברה הישראלית

Salat im kir’ei pasta – Salad with torn pieces of pasta – סלט עם קרעי פסטה

Pasta im kir’ey dag barramundi be-rotev bechamel – Pasta with pieces of Barramundi fish in bechamel sauce – פסטה עם קרעי דג ברמונדי ברוטב בשמל
