Daniel Oz’s collection of flash fables, Further Up the Path, is charming for the way they make the familiar strange and the strange familiar. These pieces of prose poetry blend two frames of reference, creating a new world. Host Marcel Sulak reads six poems from Oz on today’s episode.
Here is “Driving Eastward”:
“We drove eastward in a Jeep with four punctured tires and a dry fuel tank. We harrowed clods of earth as we advanced, and a tawny cloud of dust pursued us madly. With great difficulty, the Jeep clambered up hills and descended into craters. Eventually, we became stuck in the Jordan River’s mud and our vehicle began to sink with us inside. Shmil cried out in a broken voice: All is lost! Zruya, who can always find the upside of any situation, said calmly: It’s a miracle we made it this far.”
