MK Ruth Calderon is making an effort to implement the biblical injunction to forgive debts every seven years.

She says, “It is an idea that doesn’t require government investment because it is funded by donors. It is an idea that will change the lives of thousands of kids who live beneath the poverty line. An idea that contains within it traditions that pertained in the days of the Talmud, through which people helped their fellows.”

  1. Kenneth Mathews says:

The panel discussion of MK Calderon’s efforts was profoundly ugly and negative. I commend MK Calderon in the highest way for looking to Torah for solutions to poverty. The panel dismisses her efforts with no serious thought or reflection in favor of more failed political efforts. I for one am tired of men dismissing the Torah thinking themselves wiser then Hashem. Was any effort made to interview MK Calderon or another allied knowledgeable person about her project and her goals? I hope she succeeds in her efforts and opens many peoples eyes to the wisdom and real solutions that Torah provides to alleviate human suffering.
