Tortured by the State: Race and gender in contemporary Israel

Prof. Smadar Lavie is a visiting professor at University College Cork’s Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century, and a scholar in residence at UC Berkeley’s Beatrice Bain Research Group.

She is also the author of the recently-published Wrapped in the Flag of Israel: Mizrahi Single Mothers and Bureaucratic Torture.

Prof. Lavie tells us about the modalities of race and gender in contemporary Israel, and – having suffered institutional harassment in Israel herself – how she became a subject of her own study.
