Highly Charged: Settling Money Matters in Hebrew

One of the first things we learn to say in a foreign language is “how much does it cost?” But what if we’re the ones who are selling? We have to know how to “charge” as well.  Host Guy Sharett helps us get our heads around all these money matters, including how to tell a shopkeeper that we were mistakenly charged for something.

Kama at/a loke’ach/lokachat al shiur? – How much do you take for a session? – ?כמה את/ה לוקח/ת על שיעור

Kama ani chayav/chayevet/anachnu hayavim lecha – How much do I/we owe you? – ?כמה אני חייב/חייבת/אנחנו חייבים לך

Ani chayav lalechet – I must go – אני חייב ללכת

Chiyuv – Charge – חיוב

Ha-chiyuv shel februar – The february charge – החיוב של פברואר

Hatava – Special deal, benefit – הטבה

Yesh li hatava bishvilcha – I have a special perk for you – יש לי הטבה בשבילך

Ba-chiyuv haba – In the next charge – בחיוב הבא

Hiyavtem oti be-200 shekel be-ta’ut – You charged me with 200 shekel by mistake – חייבתם אותי ב-200 שקל בטעות

Lechayev – To charge – לחייב

Hitchayavut – Obligation; pledge – התחייבות

Ta’anug – Pleasure – תענוג

Kama hataanug? – How much is the pleasure? – ?כמה התענוג
