The Hebrew word אסור means forbidden, must not. Its root, אסר, provides us all sorts of ways to say, “we shouldn’t do that.” So let’s try to follow the rules because otherwise we might end up as an אסיר! Guy explains.

Ha-hanaya asura – Parking Forbidden – החנייה אסורה

Ha-s’chiya asura – Swimming is not allowed – השחייה אסורה

Ha-ishun asur – Smoking is forbidden – העישון אסור

Asur le’ashen – No smoking – אסור לעשן

Asur lehachnis ochel ve-shtiya – You’re not allowed to bring in food or beverages – אסור להכניס אוכל ושתייה

Asur la shokolad – She mustn’t have chocolate – אסור לה שוקולד 

Asur lo halav – He mustn’t have milk – אסור לו חלב

Asur lahem sukar – They shouldn’t have sugar – אסור להם סוכר

Bi-britanya hichlitu le’esor al hazrakot botox lifnei gil 18 – In the UK they decided to prohibit botox injections before the age of 18 – בבריטניה החליטו לאסור על הזרקות בוטוקס לפני גיל 18

Le’esor al mishehu laasot mashehu – To forbid someone from doing something – לאסור על מישהו לעשות משהו

Le’esor al + noun – To ban something – לאסור על + שם עצם

Hu asar aleyhem – He forbade them – הוא אסר עליהם

Ima sheli asra alai – My mom forbade me – אמא שלי אסרה עליי
