Sometimes people offer us things that we simply don’t want. Telemarketing? No thanks. A leaflet about a new yoga studio around the corner? No thank you. What about an offering of a slice of cheesecake baked by your friend when you’re on a diet?

How do we decline an offer (politely or impolitely) in Hebrew? On this episode, Guy supplies you with a toolkit for those moments when you need to decline an offer.

Lo, toda – No, thanks – לא, תודה

Toda, lo me’unyan/me’unyenet – Thanks, I am not interested – תודה, לא מעוניין/מעוניינת

Sori, lo karega – Sorry, not right now – סורי, לא כרגע

Slicha, lo! – Sorry, no! – !סליחה, לא

Lo mat’im – Not ‘fitting’, not interested – לא מתאים

Amarti she-ze lo mat’im – I said that I wasn’t interested – אמרתי שזה לא מתאים

Lo rotse, lo rotsa – I don’t want – לא רוצה

Slicha, ani be-pgisha – Sorry, I am in a meeting – סליחה, אני בפגישה

Lo toda, shalom! – No thanks, shalom! – !לא תודה, שלום

Lo toda, bye – No thanks, bye – לא תודה, ביי

Lo me’unyan, lo me’uneyent – I am not interested – לא מעוניין, לא מעוניינת

Lo mat’im li/lanu – Not interested – לא מתאים לי, לא מתאים לנו

Slicha, ani be-emtsa mashehu – Sorry, I am in the middle of something – סליחה, אני באמצע משהו

Ani mevakesh/mevakeshet lo lehitkasher elai yoter – I ask not to call me again – אני מבקש/ת לא להתקשר אליי יותר

Lo toda, tihye bari/tihyi bri’a – No thanks, be well – לא תודה, תהיה בריא/תהיי בריאה

Slicha, anachnu lo me’unyanim – Sorry, we’re not interested – סליחה, אנחנו לא מעוניינים

Slicha, dai – Sorry, that’s enough – סליחה, די

Nudnik – Someone who is a nuisance – נודניק

Takrit – Incident – תקרית

Mamash toda, aval ani lo ochel/ochelet mutsrei halav – Thanks so much, but I don’t eat dairy products – ממש תודה, אבל אני לא אוכל/אוכלת מוצרי חלב

Sori, ani tiv’oni – Sorry, I am vegan – סורי, אני טבעוני

Ma-ze sori, ani shomer, toda raba – So sorry, I am keeping a diet – מה-זה סורי, אני שומר, תודה רבה

Nu, haticha ktana – Come on, just a small piece – נו, חתיכה קטנה

Asur li – I am not allowed, I must not – אסור לי

Ze nir’e mehamem – It looks amazing – זה נראה מהמם

Slicha, yesh li kvar mashehu – I already have something – סליחה, יש לי כבר משהו

Ani lo yachol, slicha, mamash toda al ha-hazmana – I can’t, sorry, but thank you so much for the invitation – אני לא יכול, סליחה, ממש תודה על ההזמנה

Hayiti met lavo, aval an’lo yachol – I would die to be there, but I cannot make it – הייתי מת לבוא, אבל אנ’לא יכול
